Unfortunately, today we have left that determination to do what is right and just and have rather chosen to blend into the world around us. Christians in the last century have failed in being examples of Christ to the world. Instead of standing firm on the Word of God we have been blending with the world and its ideologies (See John 17:14; John 15:18-19; James 4:4 and 1 John 2:15). The Christian men that lived at the time of the American Revolution had that steadfastness that so many Christians of today have lost. So I thought it only fitting to give you a taste of that resolve and trust with the following quotes that you may be encouraged to stand firm on God's Word and principles.
Noah Webster
"Education is useless without the Bible."
"The Bible was America's basic text book in all fields."
In 1832 Noah Webster published "History of the United States". In it he states this;
"The brief exposition of the Constitution of the United States, will unfold to young persons the principles of republican government; and it is the sincere desire of the writer that our citizens should early understand that the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament or the Christian religion."
"God's Word, contained in the Bible, has furnished all necessary rules to direct our conduct."
Samuel Adams
As the Declaration of Independence was being signed Mr. Adams declared,
"We have this day restored the Sovereign to Whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come."
"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader .... If virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great security."
"Neither the wisest Constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt."
John Adams
On June 21st, 1776 John Adams wrote;
"Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which Freedom can securely stand.
The only foundation of a free Constitution is pure Virtue, and if this cannot be inspired into our People in a greater Measure, than they have it now, they may change their Rulers and the forms of Government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty."
In retorting Thomas Paine's assertions, John Adams stated in his diary, July 29th 1796;
"The Christian religion is, above all the Religions that ever prevailed or existed in ancient or modern times, the religion of Wisdom, Virtue, Equity, and Humanity. Let the Blackguard Paine say what he will, it is Resignation to God, it is Goodness itself to Man."
George Washington
"We may, with a kind of grateful and pious exultation, trace the finger of Providence through those dark and mysterious events, which first induced the States to appoint a general Convention and then led them one after another into an adoption of the system recommended by that general Convention; thereby in all human probability, laying lasting foundation for tranquillity and happiness."
"I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them."
I could go on with many more such quotes, but I hope that these will encourage you to hold God's standards higher than any other and to look at everything you face in life through the eyes of God's Word.
